MSE Index surrenders gains posted yesterday

The MSE Equity Total Return Index gave up the gains registered in the previous session, as it posted losses of 0.421%, to close at 8,594.169 points. The Malta Stock Exchange was very active, as a total of 17 equities were active during the session, of which seven declined and six advanced. Total turnover amounted to €413,412 spread over 81 deals.

In the banking industry, Bank of Valletta plc surrendered all of the 0.55% gains registered yesterday- to retract back to the €1.81 level. This equity was the most liquid, as a turnover of €76,446 was generated over 24 deals. The share price of HSBC Bank Malta plc however, shifted by the same amount in the opposite direction, as it closed 1c higher at €1.80. In the same sector Lombard Bank Malta plc traded flat at €2.30.

The gain registered by GO plc yesterday proved unsustainable, as it was down by 1.67% today, as 3,000 shares were traded across three transactions.

In the property sector, MIDI plc was traded heavily, as a total of 264,706 shares changed hands over four deals. The outcome was a 0.57% loss, settling at €0.346. Plaza Centres plc generated a turnover of €13,332 across five trades, causing the share price to close 0.98% lower at €1.01. Malta Properties Company plc followed suit as six deals worth a combined €16,567, dragged the price down by 1.94% to €0.505.

One of the best performers of the day was Trident Estates plc, as it posted solid gains of 3.87%, to end the session at €1.61. This was the result of two transactions in which 1,749 shares changed hands.

The retail conglomerate, PG plc also traded in positive territory, as it climbed 1.48% to reach €1.37. A total of 28,520 shares were exchanged across nine deals.

Conversely, Grand Harbour Marina ticked a notch higher as it advanced by 1.39% to €0.73 - the outcome of two deals involving 38,947 shares.

A single transaction worth just €696 in Loqus Holdings plc sharesmade the equity the best performer of the day, as it closed 70.91% higher at €0.188.

Another individual trade of 250 Mapfre Middlesea plc shares pushed the price up by 3.93%, to end the session at €1.85.

RS2 Software plc surrendered all of yesterday’s gains as it  logged the worst performance of the day- a loss in value of 7.04% to €1.32. The equity was traded six times as 21,472 shares were traded.

Medserv plc was another drag on the index, as it drifted 3.33% lower to €1.16, as a turnover of €37,041 was generated over nine deals.

International Hotel Investments plc, MaltaPost plc and SanTumas shareholdings plc all closed unchanged despite generating a turnover of €33,486 between them.

Yields in the sovereign debt market were down as the Central Bank of Malta revised its bid prices higher. The 5.1% MGS 2022 and the 5.5% MGS 2023 posted considerable gains of 2.65% and 2.52% respectively. On the other hand, the 5.1% MGS 2029 posted a loss of 0.5% to €138.04.  

 

In the corporate debt market a total of 19 issues were active of which eight headed south, while six closed higher. The 5% GlobalCapital plc Unsecured € 2021 registered the weakest performance, as the bond’s price decreased by 1.51%. On the other end of the spectrum, the 5% Hal Mann Vella Group plc Secured Bonds € 2024 logged gains of 1.18%.
