Local equities close in the red

MSE Daily Trading Report, June 06, 2018

The MSE Total Return Index shed0.25% as sentiment turned negative following a positive start to the week. Activity was spread across 15 equities as nine closed lower and only two moved higher. Nearly €370,000 were traded across 61 transactions.

On the downside Tigne Mall plc and Main Street Complex plc (MSC) lost 5% and 5.8% respectively. A total of four deals worth €67,000 were executed in the former as its share price returned to the €0.95 level. On the other hand two transactions of 15,500 shares in MSC sent the equity’s price back to its IPO price of €0.65.

In the financial sector Mapfre Middlesea plc shares declined by 1% to €2.02 while a sharp drop in demand for HSBC Bank Malta plc shares sent the equity’s price lower by 0.5 per cent. Five deals worth €24,000 were executed compared to €117,500 traded yesterday. Bank of Valletta plc shares closed flat at €1.76 as nearly 30,000 shares were active.

In the property sector Midi plc shares closed lower at €0.432 while International Hotel Investments plc gained another 3% to end the session at €0.70. Ten deals worth €34,000 were recorded.

Lack of demand for Go plc shares sent the equity lower by 3.5% or €0.12 as the equity closed at €3.36.Meanwhile RS2 Software plc shares declined by €0.02 to €1.15. Loqus Holdings plc traded flat at €0.10.

BothMalta Post plc and Medserv plc declined by 2.8% while PG plc shraes closed flat at €1.29. Simonds Farsons Cisk plc shares gained 3.1% on insignifincat volumes. The equity closed the day at €6.70.

In the sovereign debt market, yields turned positive as bond prices were generally lower. Long-dated issues were the hardest hit as the 3% MGS 2040 declined by 90 basis points while the 2.4% MGS 2041 declined by 48 basis points. Nearly €300,000 was traded across 15 deals.

Last week, the Treasury announced the €65 million issuance of the 62+ Malta Government Savings Bond for 2018, which may be increased by a further €35 million, given that there is sufficient demand. Applicants can be any individual born in the year 1956 or earlier. Existing holders of the 2017 bond issues may also apply, however preference shall be given to new applicants.

In corporate debt market turnoved jumped from €0.3m to €0.9m. The 3.5% Bank of Valletta plc 2030 was the most liquid issue as €250,000 was traded across two deals. The 4% Stivala Group Finance 2027 followed as €184,000 was executed.
