MSE Index soars 1.04% as nine equities post gains

The MSE Equity Total ReturnIndex posted a sizeable gain of 1.04%today, to close the session at 8,912.019 points. A total of 12 equities were active during the session of which nine gained ground while only two closed lower. A total of 72 deals generated a turnover of €469,339.40.

All the active equities in the banking sector traded positively, led by Bank of Valletta plc which continued its recovery with a 2.22% gain in price to close at €1.38. Turnover amounted to €71,401, generated across 14 transactions.

Its peer, HSBC Bank Malta plc posted a more modest gain of 0.56%, reaching the price of €1.81. A total of 27,102 shares changed hands across 12 trades.

In the same sector, a single trade of 32,500 FIMBank plc shares pushed the price up by 1.41% to $0.72.

In the food and beverages sector, Simonds Farsons Cisk plc traded four times, recording a gain of 1.28% over four deals of a combined 5,931 shares.

Similarly, telecommunications company, GO plc climbed 1% to reach €4.04. Trading volume totalled 11,420 shares across six transactions.

The best performer of the session was International Hotel Investments plc, with a 4.13% increase in value to €0.63. A couple of trades of 4,300 shares were executed.

Malta Properties Company plcwas the most liquid equity as €81,377 worth of shares traded over eight trades. The outcome was a 3.88% appreciation in the share price, closing at €0.535.

Also in the property sector, Malita Investments plc advanced 2.86% to €0.90 as 56,922 shares changed hands over eight deals.

Likewise, MIDI plc put on 0.76%, reaching a price of €0.665 as a result of four transactions of 42,000 shares.

Malta International Airport plcwas one of only two exceptions, as it drifted 0.81% lower to €6.10. Traded volume amounted to 5,065 shares across seven deals.

The only other faller was in the retail sector, as a single trade of 1,750PG plc shares shaved 0.71% off the share price, down to €1.40.

In thesovereign debt market performances were evenly balanced as gainers and fallers amounted to six each. The 5% MGS 2021(I) was the top gainer during the session as it advanced 0.52% to close at €113.89. At the other end of the spectrum, the 2.2% MGS 2035 (I) drifted 0.68% lower to €102.11.

In the corporate debt market a total of 15 issues were active during the session, six of which headed lower while five increased in value. The 6% Medserv plc Sec. & Grntd €  Notes 2020-2023 S1 T1 registered the largest fall as the bond price decreased by 1.68% to close the session at €102.25. On the other hand the 5.3% Mariner Finance plc Unsecured € 2024 was up 0.74% to €110.40.
