Local Weekly Round Up: 15th – 22nd September 2006

The MSE Index closed the week 1.50% lower, declining from 5,120.61 at the close of last week to 5,043.728. Only BOV and Middlesea Insurance gained on a week-on-week basis, though by a mere 0.08% and 0.04% respectively. BOV increased by 0c3 over the last two trading sessions to close at Lm3.653 while Middlesea had gained 0c1 in Tuesday’s session. These increases were however too low and not sufficient to push the Index’s performance at level higher than last weeks.

Interesting to note is that towards the end of today’s session a deal of 770 shares were placed in Santumas at Lm1.30, signifying a rise of 30% in its value, despite trading ex-dividend.

The decreases of HSBC and Maltacom share prices by 2.84% each, was the main reason that led to a fall in the Index on a week-on-week basis. HSBC closed 6c lower than last week while Maltacom closed 5c lower. Maltacom during the week issued its interim results for the period ending 30th June 2006. Pre-tax profits were lower than last years for the same period, while the interim dividend proposed was 1c5 per share; this also lower than last year’s dividend of 2c per share.

Simonds Farsons Cisk was another equity to have lost 2.70% over last week. Its share price fell by 2c to close at Lm0.72. On the other hand, Global Capital declined by a mere 0.50% or 1c to end the week at Lm2.00. Malta International Airport registered no changes from the end of last week’s price. This afternoon, MIA are also expected to publish their half-yearly report. Lombard, Suncrest, IHI, Plaza and Datatrak Holdings registered no changes to their price.
