Local Weekly Round Up: 22nd – 29th Dec‘06

The MSE Index gained 0.73% on a weekly basis to close at 4,873.47. Twelve equities were active this week, eight of which registered gains while two closed in negative territory. Lombard was once again the week’s equity top performer gaining 7.66%. GlobalCapital plc gained 4.71%, BOV plc gained 3.35%, Plaza Centre plc added 2.94% and MIA plc also gained 2.62%. In addition, Maltacom plc registered a 1.36% gain, FIMBank plc a 1.76% rise and Medserv plc edged higher by 0.74%. On the other hand, HSBC Bank Malta plc lost 2.06% while Simonds Farsons Cisk dropped 2.32%. International Hotels Investments plc and Middlesea Insurance were also active however these remained unchanged.

The MSE Index closed 108 points or 2.15% lower on a yearly basis.

GlobalCapital was the year’s best performer rising by 57% from Lm1.40 to Lm2.20, followed by Lombard Bank which rose by 29%. Middlesea Insurance added 10% while International Hotel Investments plc registered a 9.9% gain. FIMBank also had a positive year as it gained 7.59%. Other positive performers were Plaza Centre which added 2.94%, and San Tumas holdings which also gained a strong 24%. Medserv which commenced trading in October closed the year 4.62% higher.

The two major local banks, Bank of Valletta and HSBC both closed the year negatively. BOV edged slightly lower by 0.27% while HSBC closed 5% lower than the previous year. The worst large cap performer on a yearly basis was Maltacom plc which slumped by 19.46% followed by Malta International Airport plc which declined by 11.6% and Simonds Farsons Cisk which fell by 11.1%. Datatrak holdings plc also ended with very strong losses as it closed the year 23.5% lower.
