Local Weekly Round Up: 2nd — 9th February 2007

The MSE Index gained 1.48% on a weekly basis. Eleven equities were active in all, six of which closed in positive territory while three equities ended with losses on a week-on-week basis. 372 transactions were performed during the week with a total volume of 1,856,193 shares/bonds being traded for a value of Lm2,197,591. 75% of the total transactions were placed in the equity market.

It was a good week for the banking sector, as both HSBC Bank Malta (“HSBC”) and Bank of Valletta (“BOV”) registered gains. HSBC headed upwards by 2.64% to close at the price of Lm2.135. The equity had started the week off negatively as it dropped 0c1 on Monday, however throughout the rest of the week it then managed to gain 5c6. On Thursday, the Board of Directors of HSBC announced that they are scheduled to meet on Friday 16th February 2007 to: (i) consider and approve the Group’s and the Bank’s Final Audited Accounts for the financial year ended 31st December 2006 and (ii) consider the declaration of a final dividend to be recommended to the Bank’s Annual General Meeting.

BOV closed the week 1.86% higher, after it gained 2c9 on Monday, 2c on Tuesday and a further 1c9 in the last session of the week. Equity however was relatively low in the equity this week with 68 transactions being performed for a total turnover of just Lm65,418.

International Hotel Investments continued its positive run as it gained a further 1.75% on a weekly basis and closed at it highest level ever — Eur1.16. Maltacom also performed well as it closed 2c higher than last week’s closing price; a rise of 1.37%. Malta International Airport closed in positive territory as it rose by 1.45% while Medserv was also amongst the gainers this week following the 1.43% rise it attained across three minor trades during the week.

On the other hand, the worst equity performer of the week was Lombard Bank as it stumbled by 7.41%, following very negative sessions on Tuesday when it dropped 5c2 and even more on Thursday when its share price fell by 34c8. Middlesea Insurance also ended in the red as it registered a weekly decline of 2.46%. Moreover, GlobalCapital lost 3.53% in a week which saw just 1,760 of its shares trade across six transactions.

Datatrak holdings was also active during the week however did not register any changes to its share price.
