US equities were broadly unchanged yesterday with the Dow Jones up 0.2% and the S&P 500 flat. Retail stocks rallied in advance of today’s holiday sales reporting. Ralph Lauren rose 4.2%, VF Corp climbed 4.4% and Gap was up 1.8%. Elsewhere, financials suffered the bulk of selling activity. Morgan Stanley fell 0.9%, while Citigroup moved 0.6% lower. In early morning trading both the FTSE 100 and the FTSE Eurofirst 300 were 0.4% lower. Markets remain weighed down by lingering doubts about the state of eurozone interbank lending markets. Deposits at the ECB’s overnight facility on Wednesday into Thursday reached €443.7bn, close to record highs. Royal Bank of Scotland was 1.3% lower on news that 10,000 staff could be cut as the group prepares to withdraw from investment banking.
