US equities closed higher yesterday with the Dow Jones up 0.3% and the S&P 500 up 0.2%. US stocks climbed ahead of the quarterly earnings season. Shares in Inhibitex climbed 141% after Bristol-Myers Squibb agreed to buy the pharmaceutical group. Shares in other treatment developers surged, including Idenix Pharmaceuticals which moved 37% higher. The S&P 500 has recorded gains on all but one trading day so far in 2012.
In early morning trading the FTSE 100 was 0.9% higher and the FTSE Eurofirst 300 was up 1.0%. Stocks and commodities are in demand as global growth hopes outweigh eurozone fiscal worries. In London, mining stocks rose owing to strong Chinese import data. Base metals producer, Kazakhmys, rose 2.5%, while Vedanta Resources was up 2.4%.
