Global Daily round-up  (11-01-2012)

US equities closed higher yesterday with the Dow Jones up 0.6% and the S&P 500 up 0.9%. Resource stocks, Alpha Natural Resources and Cliffs Natural Resources, rose 2.8% and 4% respectively. Bank stocks also rose on renewed optimism with Bank of America and Citigroup climbing 5.7% and 3.2% respectively. On the downside, shares in Tiffany & Co fell 10.5% after the luxury retailer cut earnings guidance after reporting weak holiday same-store sales growth in the US.

In early morning trading the FTSE 100 was 0.3% lower and the FTSE Eurofirst 300 was down 0.2%. Markets were lower due to profit taking following strong gains from the previous session. Resource stocks struggled as BG Group fell 1.4%, BP was down 0.9% and Vedanta Resources was 1.4% lower. Retailers bucked the trend, rising after a series of well-received Christmas trading updates. Supergroup was 6.3% higher after reporting a rise in sales.
