MSE Index retracts as large caps trade lower

MSE Daily Trading Report, 08 October, 2019

The MSE Equity Total Return Index lost ground as it closed at 9,901.103, translating into a 0.369% decline. Out of 16 active equities, nine ended the session in negative territory while another three headed north. A total turnover of €875,458 was generated over 98 deals.

Unlike yesterday’s positive session, all three active equities in the banking sector closed in the red. HSBC Bank Malta plc headed the list of fallers as it registered a 3.55% fall, to close off at €1.36. Trading volumes increased significantly to 60,888 shares.

Following suit, its peer, Bank of Valletta plc closed 1.30% lower at €1.14 despite reaching a high of €1.17. A total turnover of €106,193 was generated as 92,578 shares changed ownership over 22 deals.

Lombard Bank Malta plc was also active over a sole deal of 50,000 shares. This resulted into a 0.88% decline to €2.26, as turnover remained elevated.

A single deal of 9,000 MaltaPost plc shares pushed its price 2.96% downards to €1.31. A total turnover of €11,790 was recorded.

Similarly, Mapfre Middlesea plc lost 2.73%, as it closed at €2.14. Two deals involving 8,250 shares generated a total turnover of €17,795.

Eight deals involving 84,650 International Hotel Investments plc shares pushed its price 0.64% lower to €0.78, off-setting its previous gain. Total turnover stood at €66,135.

In the property sector, four equities were active, whereby half of them declined and the other two closed unchanged. MIDI plc was down by 0.72% to €0.685. This was the result of nine deals involving 91,100 shares, which generated a total turnover of €62,230.

Tigne Mall plc registered a 0.55% decline to €0.910 as 146,000 shares changed hands over 11 deals. Total turnover amounted to €132,860.

Meanwhile Malita Investments plc and Malta Properties Company plc were both active but closed unchanged at €0.895 and €0665, respectively.

One deal of 230 GO plc shares pushed its price lower by a further 1.87% to €4.20. It’s subsidiary, BMIT Technologies plc gained 2.91%, as it closed at €0.53. A total turnover of €68,275 was generated as 13 deals involving 130,170 shares were executed.

Simonds Farsons Cisk plc shares reached another new all-time high of €12.10 with just a sole deal of 45 shares. A slim turnover of €544 was recorded.

Malta International Airport reached a price of €7.60, translating into a 1.33% rise. Six deals involving 5,200 shares were executed, as total turnover stood at €39,324.

Elsewhere, RS2 Software plc and PG plc were both active but closed unchanged at €1.92 and €1.87, respectively.

In the corporate debt market, 27 issues were active, of which ten advanced while another three lost ground. The 6% International Hotel Investments plc € 2024 headed the list of gainers as it closed 2.35% higher at €108.49.

In the sovereign debt market 15 issues were active, of which only one registered a gain while another 13 traded lower. The 2.4% MGS 2041 (I) declined by a further 0.74%, to close at €133.35.
