The S&P 500 closed down 1.2% yesterday, with financials causing the slide. AT&T also abandoned its $39 billion takeover of T-Mobile USA after opposition from US regulators. Overnight, Asian markets have recovered from Monday’s news of Kim Jong-il’s death as initial tensions have eased. Japan’s Nikkei 225 has closed up 0.5% whilst the Hang Seng is up 0.1%.
European markets are mixed in early trading, with the FTSE Eurofirst 300 up 0.3% whilst the FTSE 100 is down 0.1%. Doing the damage in the UK market is AstraZeneca, the pharmaceutical, which has slid on a drug pipeline warning. Bank shares were also softer as the market digested the news that the UK government would implement the Independent Commission on Banking’s reform proposals in full, albeit by 2019.
