The US equity market closed sharply up yesterday, with the S&P 500 rising 3.0%. Driving the more optimistic tone was easing tension surrounding the eurozone debt crisis and signs that the housing market in the US is finding a floor as US housing starts reached their highest level in more than 18 months. Asian markets overnight have followed the trend, with the Nikkei 225 closing up 1.5% and the Hang Seng closing up 1.9%.
In early trading this morning in Europe the FTSE Eurofirst 300 is up 0.5% and the FTSE 100 is also up 0.5%. The European Central Bank’s offer of cheap longer term financing has cheered both bond and equity markets. Yields on 10-year Italian debt are nudging down towards 6.5%.
