A fall in weekly jobless claims and stronger consumer confidence lifted US equities yesterday, with the S&P 500 closing up 0.8%. There has also been an agreement to temporarily extend payroll tax cuts. Overnight in Asia, the Nikkei 225 slid 0.8% but the Hang Seng rose 1.4%. Australia’s ASX 200 rose 1.2% on takeover activity in the mining sector.
In early trading in Europe, the FTSE Eurofirst 300 rose 0.6%, whilst the FTSE 100 rose 0.5%. Providing a lift to the market has been news that an executive member of the European Central Bank (ECB) has indicated that the ECB should be prepared to use quantitative easing if the eurozone economy requires it.
