Daily round-up (03-01-2012)
The last trading day of 2011 saw Wall Street stocks close on a muted note (Dow Jones -0.6%, S&P 500 -0.4%). While the S&P 500 and Nasdaq indices ended 2011 lower than they started, the Dow Jones index had a good year with 19 of its 30 constituents finishing higher over the period. Bank of America was the best performing stock in the index on Friday, but ironically it was also the worst performing stock in the index over the year.
With many markets closed on Monday, traders have seemingly started the new year in a buoyant mood this morning. The FTSE All-World index was up 0.5% early this morning (FTSE 100 +1.3%, FTSE Eurofirst 300 +0.7%) aided by a good session in Asia. Better-than-expected manufacturing data from China’s giant manufacturing sector has boosted global stocks. In Europe, manufacturing figures for December showed a slower pace of contraction with activity having improved the most in Greece.
