US markets closed stronger on the first day of trading for the year; the S&P 500, the Dow Jones and Nasdaq finished 1.6%, 1.5% and 1.7% higher respectively. Investors were cheered by signs of a better performing US economy. The December ISM manufacturing index rose more than forecast, to 53.9 from 52.7 in November, supporting the view of more robust growth in Q4 than in Q3. Construction orders also rose by 1.2% in November after declining 0.2% in October. Bank of America and JPMorgan Chase & Co. both gained more than 4.3% as financials were among the biggest gainers in the S&P 500.

In Europe, most European markets were in the red in early trading this morning as investors await the response to €6 billion worth of debt auctions by Germany and Portugal today. The FTSE Eurofirst 300 was down 0.3%. In London, the FTSE 100 has managed to stay in positive territory and is up 0.1%. Retailers such as Marks & Spencer, Kingfisher and Home Retail are weaker in sympathy after Next issued a cautious trading statement. Despite a good final week before Christmas, November and December sales disappointed.
