MSE Total Return Index starts the year on a negative note

The MSE Equity Total Return Index started off the year in the red, as a 0.910% decline was registered, to close at 9,528.184 points. A total of 11 equities where active during the session of which four headed north while three headed in the opposite direction. A total turnover of €93,634 was generated over 29 transactions.
As opposed to the final trading day of 2019, HSBC Bank Malta plc headed the list of fallers, as three trades worth a total of €4,688 caused the equity to depreciate by 7.69% and close at €1.20. This was in fact the main catalyst behind today’s negative Index’s performance.
Its peer, Bank of Valletta plc, traded on three different occasions and had 5,600 shares change ownership. The equity slipped by 0.47%, to close off at €1.055.
International Hotel Investments plc was also in the red, as a single deal of 1,000 shares yielded a 2.41% fall in price – to close at €0.81.
Malta Properties Company plc topped the list of gainers, as four deals worth a total of €8,363 pushed the price 3.17% higher, to close the day at €0.65.
Mapfre Middlesea plc and RS2 Software plc both registered the exact same performance, that is, an appreciation of 0.93%. The former traded only once over mere turnover, to close at €2.18, while the latter featured in five different trades and closed at the €2.16 price level.
GO plc was the most liquid equity in today’s session and registered a positive price movement of 0.47%, to close at €4.28. A total of 7,407 shares exchanged hands over five transactions.
Elsewhere, Simonds Farsons Cisk plc, Malta International Airport plc, Medserv plc and BMIT Technologies plc were also active but remained unchanged.
In the corporate debt market a total of 22 issues where active of which 10 gained ground, while two declined. The 5% Dizz Finance plc Unsecured €2026 headed the list of gainers, as it closed 3.03% higher at €103.03. On the other hand, the 4.25% Mercury Projects Finance plc Secured € 2031 was once again at the negative end of the spectrum, as it registered a 0.40% decline, to close at €100.6.
On the Sovereign debt front, eight issues were active; of which three headed higher while two declined. The 2.2% MGS 2035 (I) registered the largest decline during the session, as the bond price fell by 2.82%, to close at €121.48.
